California has identified two course models for the Next Generation Science Standards in grades 6-8, the Preferred Integrated Course Model and the Alternative Discipline Specific Model.

Two documents, published on the NGSS for California Public Schools, K-12 website, provide a description of each model. The Integrated Learning Progression Model (DOC) document provides middle school educators the rationale for the Integrated Learning Progression Course arrangement of standards developed by the California Science Expert Panel. The Discipline Specific Model (DOC) document provides middle school educators the rationale for the Discipline Specific Course arrangement.
In addition, the 2016 California Science Framework provides additional information about each course model, including sample instructional segments which outline course design.
